Zoom settings worth changing before your next meeting

Ten minutes of setup makes every future meeting better — for you and for everyone you invite.

Open Zoom

Audio before everything

Meetings fail on audio, not video. Turn on Zoom's background noise suppression, use headphones to prevent echo, and test your microphone in the settings before an important call rather than during it.

Mute by default when joining large meetings, and learn the spacebar push-to-talk trick: hold space to unmute briefly, release to mute again.

Look better with zero equipment

Face a window instead of sitting with one behind you — natural light from the front does more than any ring light. Raise the laptop so the camera is near eye level; a stack of books works fine.

Zoom's "touch up my appearance" and background blur are in the video settings. Use a real tidy wall over a virtual beach; fake backgrounds distract more than they impress.

Hosting without chaos

Enable the waiting room for external guests, share a single window instead of your whole screen (nobody needs to see your notifications), and record important meetings to the cloud or your machine with everyone's knowledge.

For recurring meetings, use one standing link instead of generating new ones — it removes a whole category of "I can't find the link" messages.

Plan limits to know

Free accounts have a time limit on group meetings that has caught many hosts by surprise mid-sentence. Check the current limits on Zoom's pricing page if your meetings regularly run long.
