How to build UTM campaign links without breaking existing URLs

Create consistent source, medium and campaign tags, preserve useful query parameters and avoid exposing private information in links.

Decide what you want to distinguish

UTM parameters label traffic for analytics systems that support them. A simple campaign link can describe the source, medium and campaign: newsletter, email and autumn_launch, for example. Those labels help distinguish promotions, but adding a label alone does not create an analytics setup.

Agree on a naming convention before generating many links. Choose a consistent case, spelling and separator. newsletter and Newsletter may create separate reporting labels, depending on the reporting system, so inconsistency makes results harder to compare.

Preserve the destination URL

Paste the full destination into UTM Link Builder, including https://. If it already contains a query such as ?product=blue, the builder retains that parameter and adds the campaign fields using URL parsing rather than raw string concatenation.

For example, a destination ending /shop?product=blue can become /shop?product=blue&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=autumn_launch. A fragment such as #pricing remains at the end. If the URL already has a matching UTM key, the builder replaces that key instead of adding a second copy.

Use descriptive labels, not personal information

Do not put an email address, customer name, account number or secret token in a campaign label. URLs can appear in browser history, shared messages, logs and analytics reports. A convenient label should describe the campaign, not identify a recipient.

Use fictional campaign names while learning. If you are linking to a destination that contains sensitive or signed parameters, do not edit the link without understanding how those parameters work. Adding or changing a query can break some signed URLs.

Copy the result into a browser and check the destination, page section and expected product state. If an existing parameter is necessary for the page, confirm it is still present. Test the actual shortened link as well if you use a separate shortening service.

Then verify the receiving analytics setup. Tracking can depend on consent, configuration, browser restrictions and whether the page actually loads. A valid campaign URL does not guarantee that every click will be recorded or attributed the way you expect.

Avoid polluting internal navigation

Campaign labels are usually most useful on links arriving from external campaigns. Adding new UTM tags to ordinary links inside your own site can confuse campaign interpretation. Keep internal navigation clean unless you have a deliberate measurement plan.

Store a simple list of approved labels for each campaign. Reusing a tested naming convention is more valuable than generating a new phrase for every message, because reports become easier to group and audit.
