About this free gpa calculator tool
Average grade points weighted by credits for up to three courses. Calculators answer a defined arithmetic question using the values you supply. Keep units and currencies consistent, choose the correct starting amount and inspect the assumptions before using a result. Estimates do not replace a lender quotation, an official tax rate, a medical assessment or a jurisdiction-specific deadline rule.
A practical example
A concrete example uses course 1 grade points: 4; course 1 credits: 3; course 2 grade points: 3; course 2 credits: 3; course 3 grade points: 2; course 3 credits: 2. The result is GPA: 3.125.
Before you rely on the result
Results use floating-point arithmetic and are rounded to six decimal places. Confirm units and required precision before relying on the result. Grading scales differ between schools.
How do you calculate GPA with credit hours?
Grade point average weights each course’s grade points by its credit value. Multiply the grade points for each course by that course’s credits to obtain quality points, add the quality points and divide by the total included credits. A higher-credit course has more influence on the result than a lower-credit course with the same grade difference.
This calculator accepts grade points directly for up to three courses; it does not decide how your school maps letter grades to numbers. Institutions differ in their treatment of plus and minus grades, repeated classes, pass/fail courses and weighted honors grades. For a cumulative GPA, use all applicable quality points and credits rather than taking a simple average of semester GPAs. At least one included credit is required to avoid division by zero. Check the official academic policy before using the estimate for graduation, scholarship or admission decisions.
GPA = sum(grade points × course credits) ÷ sum(course credits).
A worked example
Courses with grade points 4, 3 and 2 carry 3, 3 and 2 credits respectively. Total quality points are 12 + 9 + 4 = 25, so GPA is 25 ÷ 8 = 3.125.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Averaging course grades equally ignores different credit weights.
- Assuming every institution uses the same grade scale can misstate GPA.
- Averaging semester GPAs without their credit totals misweights the cumulative result.
