Wolfram Alpha: the answer engine hiding in plain sight
It's not a search engine — it computes answers. Ten kinds of questions Wolfram Alpha handles better than Google.

A different kind of answer
Search engines find pages that might contain your answer. Wolfram Alpha computes the answer itself from curated data: type "40000 EUR to USD" and you get the conversion with a chart of the rate, not a list of websites about currency.
Once you internalize that difference, you start noticing how many everyday questions are really computations.
Everyday questions it nails
Nutrition ("calories in 200g of cooked rice"), unit conversions of every imaginable kind, date arithmetic ("days between March 3 and December 18"), mortgage and loan calculations, and comparisons like "UK vs Japan" that return side-by-side tables of statistics.
For students, the step-by-step solutions to algebra and calculus problems are the headline feature — though showing the steps sits behind the paid tier.
Getting the phrasing right
Wolfram Alpha prefers terse, math-flavored queries over conversational ones. "Integral of x squared" works; "can you help me integrate x squared please" confuses it. If a query fails, strip words rather than add them.
When it misinterprets you, check the assumption boxes near the top of the results — you can often correct its reading with one click.
Free tier boundaries
The free version computes generously but limits step-by-step working and some extended computations. For occasional homework checks and daily curiosity, free suffices; heavy student use may justify the paid plan.
