Open Khan Academy

Why it works for adult learners

Khan Academy is completely free and entirely self-paced, which removes the two biggest barriers for adults: cost and embarrassment. Nobody sees you rewatch a fractions video three times. The platform simply waits, infinitely patient.

Courses run from early arithmetic through calculus, plus sciences, economics and more — each built from short videos paired with practice exercises.

Finding your real starting point

The instinct is to start where you think you should be. Resist it. Take the course challenges or unit tests to find where your knowledge actually breaks, then start one unit earlier. Solid foundations make everything downstream faster.

Gaps from school are normal and often oddly specific — fine with algebra, shaky on percentages. Filling them feels slow for a week and then suddenly makes everything easier.

A study rhythm that sticks

Twenty to thirty minutes a day beats weekend marathons for retention. Watch the video with a pen in hand, work the exercises until the system confirms mastery, and write down anything you got wrong.

Expect plateaus. The weeks where nothing seems to improve are where the learning consolidates; the people who finish are simply the ones who kept showing up.

Beyond maths

The same approach works for the science, computing and economics courses. Pick one subject at a time — the ambition to relearn everything at once is the most reliable way to relearn nothing.
