What it does

ElevenLabs turns written text into spoken audio with voices that carry natural pacing and emotion — a big step beyond the robotic text-to-speech of a few years ago. It offers a library of ready-made voices and, on paid plans, tools for working with custom voices.

Common uses: narrating articles and newsletters, voicing videos, prototyping audiobooks, and making content accessible to people who prefer listening.

Getting natural-sounding output

Write for the ear, not the eye. Short sentences, contractions, and punctuation that marks breathing points all improve the result. Numbers, abbreviations and unusual names deserve phonetic spelling — "SQL" becomes "sequel" if that's how you want it said.

Generate a paragraph, listen, adjust the text, regenerate. Voice quality comes from iterating on the script more than from any setting.

The responsibility part

Only clone or imitate a voice with the explicit consent of the person it belongs to, and disclose AI narration where listeners might reasonably assume a human. Several jurisdictions are writing rules around synthetic voices, and platform policies increasingly require disclosure.

These are not bureaucratic niceties: voice is identity, and misuse erodes trust in audio generally — including your own.

Free tier notes

A free tier with a monthly character quota lets you test properly before paying. Commercial licensing terms differ by plan, so read the current terms before using generated audio in anything you sell.
